Dive into summer reading with books, programs, prizes, and more, here at the
Southgate Veterans Memorial Library!

We are excited to be bringing back in person events this year! Registration for the kids and teen program can be completed in person at the library, or online; adult participants must register in person. Either way, you will be able to earn prizes, and a chance to win a big prize in the end of summer raffles!

How to have fun with Summer Reading

    1. 1. Register - Drop in to the library and sign up in person to get your bag and reading log, or go directly to READSquared to sign up online. You can also download the free app from the app store on your mobile device. Register anyone in your family, ages 0 to 17 in our Oceans of Possibilities Program. You get a digital badge just for registering!
      2. Log your Reading - Log your time read on the website or app. You’ll earn digital badges along the way. Don’t feel like going digital? We’ve got you covered, track your time using the paper log and show us at the library. Each bubble on the reading log is worth 20 minutes of reading time.
      3. Earn Prizes - Read to reach the Summer Reading Milestones of 5, 10, and 15 hours! At each milestone, collect the following rewards from the library.

      5 hours read/300 points - 3 small prizes
      10 hours read/600 Points - 3 small prizes and a book
      15 hours read/ 900 Points - 3 small prizes, a book and a raffle ticket
      4. Select your Raffle ticket - Once you’ve reached 900 points (through reading and event attendance) you’re eligible to enter the raffle for one of the big prizes! Simply select “Raffle” on your account and “Get a ticket” for the prize you’d like to be in the running for, or ask us to enter this for you. Then sit back with a book and wait until the winners are announced on August 22nd. Winners will be announced on our website, and contacted by phone or email to collect their prize.
  • Bonus: If you come to any of our performer programs this summer you will be given a special code for extra points to go toward your reading total.

    Rings of Steel Pirate Show, July 6

    Get ready for a swashbuckling adventure filled with fun, laughter, and sword fights! Learn about weapons and armor after the show!

    Oceans of Fun Magic, July 20

    Fish! Lobsters! Sharks! Mermaids! SCUBA-diving possums! Wait...what?! Jim Kleefeld presents an exciting show featuring stories and tales mixed with magic.

    Paleo Joe, August 3

    Paleo Joe joins us to explore the ancient creatures of the deep. What fun things has our paleontologist friend dug up this time?

    Children birth to walking and their caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs, and rhymes, to nurture prereading skills.

    Family Storytime, Tuesdays

    Children and their families are invited to join us for books, music, and more! After the program, join us for a craft!

    Teen Programs

    Ocean Bath Bombs

    Time to make a splash! Youth in grades 6-12 are invited to stop by the front desk and request a teen craft kit: bath bombs! Each kit will have instructions and all the necessary supplies, plus a special surprise!

    MiLibrary Quest: Treasures of the Deep
    June 15 - July 31

    Pirates, shipwrecks, and monsters have inhabited our oceans for millennia. Accept this challenge and complete a crossword puzzle by finding clues on Michigan library websites. Answers to the puzzle will include famous pirates, real shipwrecks, and mythological monsters. The quest begins on June 15 at Solve the puzzle by July 31 and enter to win a prize!     Adult Summer Reading Program

    Welcome to the Southgate Veterans Memorial Library’s third Adult Summer Reading Program! Registration starts June 20th and the program runs until August 20th. This is for our 18+ crowd, so stop by the library and sign up. Registration is fast and easy, in person at the library, and there's lots of fantastic prizes available to win along with three take 'n' make craft events!

    Air Plant Jellyfish Take ‘n’ Make
    June 20th - July 9th

    Make your own air plant jellyfish with pink, green, purple, or sputnik urchins! Murex shells are also available for a different look!

    Ocean Bath Bomb Take ‘n’ Make
    July 11th - July 30th

    Have a spa day and make a bath bomb! Choose from banana, coconut, awapuhi and seaberry, pineapple, mango, or ocean breeze scents. All will be a pretty ocean blue color!

    Seashell Wall Art Take ‘n’ Make
    August 1st - August 20th

    Learn how to make a seashell wall hanging! Choose from clam shells or cowries for the perfect beachy craft.
